Severe osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage ( a glossy covering of bony surfaces) of the knee is rubbed away so much that the joint is exposing bone on bone. The cartilage acts as a natural lubricant and shock absorber to allow smooth movement of the joint. Without the cartilage, the bones will begin grinding on each other causing mechanical symptoms along with changes within the knee joint cellular environment triggering more inflammation and breakdown.
This grinding can cause pain, inflammation, bone spurs, stiffness, reduced movement, and swelling with fluid. Severe osteoarthritis of the knee may make it very difficult to walk to the point that a brace, walker, or cane might be necessary for everyday tasks. Age, weight, activity level, trauma, gender (females at higher risk than males), hormones, and genetics all play a role in disease progression.
