Prolotherapy
What is prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy harnesses the power of concentrated dextrose (sugar) to irritate and inflame tissues in the affected area. This process releases growth factors that may aid in the repair of painful tendons, ligaments, and joints. A premier destination for prolotherapy, the Orthohealing Center aims to deliver effective treatment and expedite our patients’ respective recoveries.
How does prolotherapy work?
Prolotherapy has two main mechanisms: mechanical and physiological.
Mechanically, we use ultrasound guidance to precisely target and deliver injections to the damaged area. In doing so, we create small, additional injuries that stimulate inflammation to initiate the body’s natural healing responses.
Physiologically, the solution used in prolotherapy releases growth factors that may aid in wound healing.
Conditions treated with prolotherapy
Below are some of the musculoskeletal conditions we commonly treat with prolotherapy:
- Shoulder, neck, back, wrist, hip, hand and knee pain
- Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ)
- Arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Sports injuries
- Unstable joints
- Chronic conditions
What to expect during prolotherapy treatment
Prolotherapy is generally well-tolerated. A session begins by comfortably positioning the patient and numbing the treatment area before injecting the prolotherapy solution directly into the weakened and damaged connective tissue. To minimize risk, maximize outcomes, and ensure comfort and safety, the Orthohealing Center’s experienced team uses precise, image-guided techniques to deliver both the anesthesia and therapy.
With minimal post-procedure restrictions, patients typically resume their daily activities and routines immediately after receiving prolotherapy. Although there may be some mild swelling, stiffness, and increased discomfort for several days, these symptoms are indicative of the body’s natural healing response.
Diagnosis and individual response to treatment inform the number of prolotherapy sessions ultimately prescribed. Please note that a series may be necessary for optimal results.
Is prolotherapy right for you?
Safe and minimally invasive, prolotherapy has been particularly effective in treating ligament and joint injuries in active individuals. A natural alternative to cortisone injections, it’s also used to address pain. However, prolotherapy is not suitable for everyone; contraindications include severe arthritis, major tendon injuries, significant muscle tearing, and notable spinal pain.
