Alpha-2-Macroglobulin

What is Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M)?

A2M, naturally found in blood plasma, serves as a crucial carrier for numerous proteins and growth factors. Belonging to a family of protease inhibitors, it can deactivate various proteinases responsible for cartilage degradation, thus reducing inflammation in arthritic joints. We typically administer this treatment when there is the presence of excessive inflammation or bursitis; it may also be added to other injections for its anti-inflammatory properties.

How is A2M prepared?

After gently drawing blood from the patient, we use a centrifuge to spin the extracted material in a test tube; lowest in density, the plasma rises to the top layer during this process. By removing the naturally existing water from this isolated plasma, a hemoconcentration device dehydrates and concentrates its protein levels in preparation for A2M treatment.
