November 3, 2012

A recent study out of Taiwan indicates that alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) may be beneficial in treating obesity and high cholesterol. Alpha-lipoic acid, also known simply as Lipoic Acid (LA), is available as an over-the-counter nutritional supplement and has been used nutritionally and clinically since the 1950s for various diseases and conditions. It has been researched extensively for it’s beneficial use in heart disease, wound healing, age-related memory loss, Alzheimer’s Disease , erectile dysfunction, and the prevention of migraines.

The study concluded that giving alpha-lipoic acid to diabetic mice on a high-fat diet dramatically reduced their body weight and fat content.

The doctors of the Orthohealing Center have used ALA to help improve blood flow in patients with neuropathy, a condition that causes numbness and tingling in the hands and feet and can be diagnosed with Electromyography/Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCS ).  We are excited to learn that research continues to reveal multiple new potential benefits of this natural substance.
