Shockwave for Women’s Health
Shockwave: what you need to know
Shockwave therapy is a noninvasive treatment option that can benefit women experiencing urinary incontinence, muscle tightness and spasms, and painful sex. Delivering high-energy sound waves to the pelvic floor, it is used to stimulate improved microcirculation, breakdown scar tissue, and diminish pain. (It is also administered to relieve pain and support healing from sports and orthopedic conditions and injuries.)
The Orthohealing Center applies shockwave when treating:
- Dyspareunia— a condition that causes painful intercourse
- Pelvic floor disfunction—a condition that can manifest as urinary incontinence, painful urination, or a constant need to urinate
- Chronic pelvic pain –persistent pain in the pelvic region lasting six months or more, often arising from multiple overlapping gynecologic, urologic, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, or neurologic causes
How Shockwave works
With demonstrated efficacy in treating many women’s health conditions, this therapy uses focused acoustic waves to stimulate healing and improve blood flow in targeted tissues. It aims to enhance circulation, help reduce inflammation, release muscle tension, and support repair of damaged or hypersensitive structures in the pelvic region.
For women struggling with pelvic floor dysfunction or chronic pelvic pain, shockwave therapy may decrease the muscle tightness, scar tissue, and nerve hypersensitivity that contribute to ongoing discomfort. As these conditions often involve a complex interplay of musculoskeletal, neurologic, and vascular factors, shockwave therapy is often combined with pelvic floor physical to optimize long-term outcomes. When indicated, Dr. Aufiero will refer to specialized pelvic floor physical therapists, skilled sex therapists, and / or hormone experts.
Is Shockwave covered by insurance?
