Orthopedics today: New study demonstrates successful Bone Marrow stem cell-rich collagen paste use in repairing cartilage defects

A recent study provides evidence supporting the use of stem cell-rich collagen paste made of patient’s own bone marrow in repairing talar osteochondral (ankle bone cartilage) defect. The paste creates a hyaline (elastic) cartilage, which is sturdier than the fibrous (tough) cartilage created by the surgery alone. Patients that underwent the paste therapy following surgery showed better results than the patients that underwent surgery alone. Even though long-term data is yet to come, this procedure has shown excellent short-term results.
