The Orthohealing Center Publishes Article in The Journal of Stem Cell Research and Transplantation:

Just recently, the Orthohealing Center’s Dr. Steven Sampson & Dr. Danielle Aufiero, along with Assistant Research Coordinator, Hunter Vincent, have published a mini review article in the Journal of Stem Cell Research and Transplantation. The article discusses the development of the three generations of Orthobiologic treatments, and illustrates the rapid development of regenerative cellular therapies in the field of Orthopedics. Although the article elaborates in much greater detail, the first generation of Orthobiologic therapy is Hyaluronic Acid, a sticky viscous lubricant which is a normal component of a healthy joint and acts like WD-40,  improving joint range of motion, and decreasing friction in an arthritic joint. Platelet Rich Plasma quickly rose to be classified as the 2nd generation of Orthobiologic therapy, and the first cellular therapy to be derived from the patient’s own body. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), a concentrated cellular mixture of platelets and growth factors, is thought to promote healing by creating a supra-physiologic inflammatory response, which may increase the body’s natural healing abilities. Many studies are emerging to show that PRP may potentially have great effects on array of orthopedic injuries, including chronic injuries such as Tennis Elbow and joint Osteoarthritis. The 3rd generation of Orthobiologic therapy, Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC), has most recently developed as the new kid on the block for cellular injectable therapy, and preliminary research on the effects of BMC and its potent concentration of Mesenchymal Stem Cells looks promising.

For a more in depth discussion about the three generations of Orthobiologic treatments, feel free to read the article. The doctors at the Orthohealing Center are constantly striving to remain at the forefront of Orthobiologic therapy, and are proud to contribute such an important article to the medical community. Although preliminary results for the use of Orthobiologic therapy are revealing positive outcomes, further collaboration between physicians and scientists is needed to completely understand the exact mechanisms and most effective use of treatment.
