New Study from Spain: Platelet-Rich Plasma: Can it help with dry eye disease?

September 4, 2017

Dry eye is a very common symptom that affects 8% of the U.S. population. Dry eye occurs when tears are not able to provide adequate moisture. There are various factors that can contribute to dry eye disease, and this symptom usually resolves when underlying causes are addressed. However, it is still frustrating to experience discomfort in the eyes on a daily basis. Traditionally, dry eye diseases are treated with anti-inflammatory eye drops or oral medication. However, a recent study in Spain has shown that the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy leads to better outcomes. According to the study, patients are treated with plasma that is isolated from their own blood. The results show that there is a significant decrease for reported symptoms in moderately severe dry eye disease, and clinical tests also objectively confirm the improved outcome after the PRP treatment. PRP therapy has been widely used in recent years in the field of orthopedic regenerative medicine, mainly treating arthritis with joint pain or chronic tendon injuries (tendinosis). Thanks to the growth factors found within the blood, PRP promotes tissue regeneration while providing a means of natural healing. More applications are being studied to best determine ideal use of this promising science and technology.
