Recent study from The American Journal of Sports Medicine: National Hockey League players with increased hip labral and joint cartilage injuries, especially Goalie Position.

In a recent study intra-articular hip (hip joint) injuries from the years 2006-2010 in the NHL were evaluated. This study looked at all positions (goaltenders, defensemen and forwards) to see if any one position was more prone to get this particular injury and also determined the average games missed in the recovery process. It was concluded that the cartilage that surrounds the hip joint (labrum) is most commonly injured and results in missing 8 games on average. Additionally, it was found that goaltenders are at a higher risk to get this injury when measuring hip injuries per game played. But the risk was same as other positions when measuring injuries per hours played. Hip Labral tears may commonly be repaired through Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation or may require Hyaluronic Acid Injections to lubricate the region or PRP to provide more powerful relief. Lastly, if conservative measures fail, Hip Arthroscopy (Minimally invasive surgery) may be appropriate.
