Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M)

A2M is naturally contained in blood plasma and acts as an important carrier for numerous proteins and growth factors. It is part of a family of protease inhibitors, meaning that it can deactivate a variety of proteinases that typically degrade cartilage by reducing inflammation in arthritic joints.

Research suggests that A2M may potentially halt the degenerative process in arthritis. Studies have suggested that A2M can protect cartilage cells (chondrocytes) in post-traumatic osteoarthritis.

At Orthohealing, we implement A2M when patients have an excess amount of inflammation or bursitis.

How Is It Prepared?

After drawing whole blood from the patient, the plasma is separated by a centrifuge. The plasma has the lowest density, so it sits at the top layer of a test tube after blood spinning. Afterwards the plasma is placed in a hemoconcentration that isolates and concentrates plasma proteins including A2M by removing water found in the plasma.
