Correlation of Magnesium and Fibromyalgia Pain

March 16, 2013

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that is characterized by long-term pain, specifically in the tendons, which are tissue that connect bone to muscle, and joints of the body. Recent studies conducted by Dr. Delda Bagis, M.D. of Turkey demonstrates the link between magnesium levels and fibromyalgia. Bagis looked at the magnesium levels in the blood of fibromyalgia patients versus age-matched healthy control patients and found a direct relationship between the low magnesium levels and greater symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Bagis also conducted three different fibromyalgia treatment therapies using three groups of 20 patients each. One group was treated with just magnesium, another group with an antidepressant called amitriptyline and the third group with a mixture of both. The study lasted 8 weeks and it was found that magnesium was effective on reducing tenderness in muscles and functional status while the mixture of the antidepressant, amitriptyline, along with the magnesium was more effective in treatment of these symptoms than either treatment alone.
