What Types Of Stem Cells Do We Use In Regenerative Medicine?
Stem cells play a large role in the rapidly growing field of regenerative medicine. Stem cell therapy, a regenerative medicine therapy, uses a patient’s own stem cells to help repair damaged tissues and repair injuries. Here at the Orthohealing Center, we are pioneers in bone marrow stem cell therapy. This therapy is a very promising advancement in orthopedics and sports medicine. It represents a brand-new approach to treating orthopedic injuries including bone and joint pain.
What exactly are Stem cells?
Stem cells acting as “mobile paramedics” are naturally produced by your body to heal injuries and repair damaged and diseased tissue. In fact every second, 15 million blood cells die and are regenerated in our bodies. Immediately after an acute injury, they are released off of blood vessels called “pericytes” and migrate towards the injured area to begin healing. Unfortunately, our bodies sometimes get overwhelmed by a significant physical stress and the injury and can’t heal themselves. This leads to chronic pain, inflammation, and limited function.
What type of stem cells do we use at the Orthohealing center?
In our facility, we utilize bone marrow-derived stem cells derived directly from the patient. Bone marrow-derived stem cells have healing and growth factors that allow for regeneration of damaged or injured tissue. Perhaps most important in addition to stem cells, bone marrow hosts very potent anti-inflammatory proteins often responsible for the clinical effects of reducing pain. After we harvest the stem cells from the patient, the collection undergoes sterile treatment for concentration.
Once we obtain a small injectable volume, the stem cells are reinjected into the patient’s body at the site of damage or injury on the same day. This injection involves the use of imaging technology such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy (X-ray) for precise application. This treatments is generally reserved for advanced or challenging cases where traditional treatment has not provided relief.
At the Orthohealing Center, not only have our physicians remained on the cutting edge of this minimally invasive approach to orthopedic wellness, they have also been instrumental in researching and developing this technique from the outset. When you come to the Orthohealing Center, rest assured you are in the hands of those who know it best, leading to improved outcomes, reduced downtime, and greater comfort and mobility.
