Treating Chronic Patellar Tendinopathy via Bone Marrow Concentrate Treatment

A recent study completed at the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Center in New York, New York examined the effects of bone marrow concentrate injections on chronic patellar tendinopathy. By extracting a patient’s own bone marrow from the hip bone, regenerative cells can be separated and then injected into an area of degeneration. These bone marrow cells can potentially enhance the natural repair and healing at the site of degeneration, in this case, the patellar tendon. The results of the study showed that after a 5-year followup, significant clinical improvements were seen. Seven of eight patients remarked that they would undergo the procedure again if the issue occurred in the opposite knee. Bone marrow concentrate therapy is now being offered at orthopedic centers like the Orthohealing Center in Los Angeles, California, as well as a variety of other treatments designed to use the body’s natural processes to speed recovery.
