Plastics and Stem Cells Regrow Bone and may help prevent amputations

Fracture and bone loss caused by trauma and osteoporosis are a major clinical and socioeconomic problem. Faculties of chemistry and musculoskeletal departments at two universities in the UK joined forces to develop a polymer implant using stem cells. Through their research, they found that their material promoted bone regrowth around the polymer implant, concluding that their materials were excellent supports for human bone marrow derived cells. The material was built into a 3D honeycomb pattern, which served as a scaffold for the bone marrow stem cells. This research has the potential to prevent millions of amputations performed currently.
