New Study Reveals Benefits with Treatment of Knee Joint Osteoarthritis with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in Comparison with Hyaluronic Acid

A new research study published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation reveals that treatment of knee joint osteoarthritis with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) benefits patients more than commonly used Hyaluronic Acid injections.  The study references Dr. Steven Sampson’s initial pilot trial and is an example of the ever expanding research on new applications for PRP!

The new study, out of the University Hospital of L. Pasteur in Slovakia, included 120 patients with Grade 1, 2, or 3 osteoarthritis which were divided into two groups. One group of patients was treated using three knee joint injections with PRP, and the second group of patients was given three injections of hyaluronic acid, which is the active component in viscosupplements such as Orthovisc, Synvisc, Supartz, and Eufflexa.

Using various outcome measures to measure pain ratings, the study revealed statistically significantly better results in the improvement of pain recorded in a group of patients who received PRP injections after a 3 and 6 month follow-up.  Furthermore, no severe adverse events were observed.

The study concluded that platelet-rich plasma is a safe and effective method in the treatment of the initial stages of knee osteoarthritis.
