Major League Baseball (MLB) Removes Cannabis from Banned Substances List

The Major League Baseball (MLB) association has removed cannabis from its list of banned substances beginning in Spring 2020. This change is reflecting the societal shift in attitudes towards cannabis use and its increasing legalization on state-wide levels. MLB is also determined to prevent opioid abuse through a new strategy regarding these dangerous substances. MLB will take measures to refer to opioid treatment before rather than disciplining a player immediately upon discovery. This major change in approach targets the disease of addiction in hopes to rehabilitate players instead of punishing them for policies influenced by the war on drugs era. MLB is setting an example for other sports and professional organizations as they focus on individual-based problem solving, rather than systematic discipline. For more information, click here.
