Help your kids avoid sports injuries from overuse
For many young promising athletes, they are raised in an extremely competitive environment where they are taught to play through injuries and do whatever it takes to excel in a sport with hopes to gain college scholarships or even a chance to become a professional athlete. A recent study by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons found that 22% of soccer players 14 years old and younger suffer from overuse injuries, with the rates even higher for baseball (25%) and football (28%) players. Areas around the growth plates – where the bone is still growing in young individuals – are regions where physicians often see overuse injuries and can pose a risk for stunted or abnormal growth. In middle school and high school kids, 50% of the injuries can be prevented if the athletes aren’t playing year-round. More isn’t necessary better and encourage balance with different sports using different muscle groups. To find out more, click here.
