Can Platelet Rich Plasma help relieve some of your osteoarthritis symptoms?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is being used as an alternative to invasive surgery for those that are suffering from osteoarthritis. Typically patients were being treated with hyaluronic acid, another injection targeted to control pain and swelling, but there is a growing body of research that shows promising results for PRP. A study conducted by Slovakian researchers put hyaluronic acid up against PRP. The study had 120 early knee osteoarthritis patients that either received a PRP or hyaluronic acid injection. At the three and six month checkups results showed that those that received PRP injections showed better results. Another study conducted by New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery, showed that in 22 patients who had mild to moderate early knee osteoarthritis had reduced pain by nearly 60 percent after one year of receiving a PRP therapy.

Though the results so far are promising, researchers still have some concerns about PRP therapy. At a forum held by The American Academy for Orthopedic Surgeons top clinicians and researchers agreed that PRP injections are a possible treatment for osteoarthritis patients, especially those that are not finding relief from other types of treatment. Several studies are currently in the works to further test the benefits of PRP injections. The Orthohealing Center can tell you whether or not this regenerative medicine treatment is right for you.
