Bone Marrow Concentrate Shows Positive Results for Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment:
The Orthohealing Center has been treating degenerative arthritis with a myriad of different “joint cocktails”, cumulating benefits from various options such as Hyaluronic Acid and Platelet Rich Plasma. However, in recent years Orthohealing Center has emerged as an international leader in using extracted Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC) in the management of Osteoarthritis. Dr Sampson and Dr Aufiero recently published one of the first review articles in the United States discussing the injection of Bone Marrow for cartilage disease. Since this publication, other studies have emerged illustrating the regenerative potential and anti-inflammatory effects of Bone Marrow Concentrate.
The most recent article, published in the European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, examined the use of BMC plus adipose tissue (AKA: human fat cells, which are also rich in regenerative cells) in the treatment of 41 patients (75 knees) with degenerative arthritis. Each arthritic joint was given an arthritis severity grade ranging from I-IV (I= no signs of arthritis, IV = Severe Arthritis) via X- Ray before treatment. The overall results revealed significant improvements in pain and function, which continued to improve at 3, 6, and 12 months at follow up. When the results were divided up by arthritis grade, the study revealed that joints with severe arthritis (Grade IV) showed poorer improvements in pain and function than grades I-III.
This recent study suggests that Bone Marrow Concentrate may be an effective treatment for improving pain and function in patients suffering from Osteoarthritis. Although, given the decreased improvements in severe arthritis cases, the study suggests BMC to be more effective in early to moderate phases of arthritis. More clinical trials and publications are needed to fully understand the mechanism and effectiveness of BMC treatment of arthritis, but the results of this recent study add to the growing evidence supporting the regenerative potential of Bone Marrow Concentrate.
