Achilles Tendon Rupture Can Ruin Athletes’ Professional Career

Achilles tendon, which connects heel bone and calf muscle, is the thickest tendon in human body. Achilles tendon rupture is very painful, and the injury often needs surgical reconstruction. Recently, Orthopedics This Week cited a published study from The American Journal of Sports Medicine, suggesting that post-surgical recovery and rehabilitation could take years, and the results would never be comparable to pre-injury. This study takes 62 players from National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and National Hockey League (NHL), and compares each athlete’s performance at pre-injury and post-recovery time points. The results suggested that 19 (30.6%) athletes were unable to return to play, while the remaining players spent 1-2 years in rehabilitation. These data show that Achilles tendon rupture is a devastating injury. It is very important to see a doctor if you feel any discomfort. Otherwise, minor conditions could lead to life-long devastation.
