Using Radiofrequency Ablation to treat SI Joint Pain featured in this month’s “Pain Pathways” Magazine

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain afflicts millions of Americans every year, and is thought to be the main culprit in up to 30% of chronic back pain sufferers.  It continues to be widely underdiagnosed by many physicians in part because MRIs of the low back typically do not focus on this area and therefore show nothing abnormal.  Most patients with the condition feel hopeless when conventional treatments including physical therapy and steroid injections do not provide sustained relief.

As outlined in the Winter 2011 issue of Pain Pathways magazine, Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation offers new hope.  In this procedure, a probe is inserted near the area of the SI joint and its tip is heated – deadening the surrounding nerve tissue and offering substantial and more prolonged pain relief.   A similar procedure can be performed for nerves in the low back (medial branch nerves which innervate facet joints of the lumbar spine).

We have performed numerous RF ablations at the Orthohealing Center with exceptional results , and are excited to see word spread about this innovative procedure!

I was thrilled to participate in an incredibly insightful seminar led by Physician’s from The Mayo Clinic leading the way in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound; Dr Jay Smith & Dr Jon Finnoff. I had the opportunity to meet many leading docs from around the world & exchange protocols and plant seeds for research collaboration. The 3 day course is highly recommended & featured excellent lectures along with workstations with cadavers to practice procedures & diagnostics. It was great to learn how Mayo and other leading centers around the world are integrating state of the art technology with musculoskeletal ultrasound. There were over 1oo Physicians in attendance, a sign that more and more Dr’s are learning this skill to enhance the level of care they provide to their patients.

Recently we were thrilled to have visiting Sports Medicine Specialist, Dr Adam Weglein visit our center to observe procedures. After completing a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic;Dr Weglein has travelled around the world learning new therapies to address osteoarthritis & pain. Dr Weglein will be a guest lecturer at our upcoming PRP seminar. He will be speaking about a very exciting technique called Neural Prolotherapy. Dr Weglein postulates that pain may be generated just beneath the skin at the “sub-cutaneous level.” By giving several small injections of pure sterile water & dextrose, doctors are able to dramatically relieve swelling & pain generated from small nerves and pain receptors. Dr Weglein travelled to Ferrara Italy to study with a renowned expert, Dr John Lyftogt & has since published a paper on his work. Thanks for our patients for being so cooperative.OrthohealingCenter Logo1 300x184 Dr Adam Weglein from Houston Texas visits Orthohealing Center

Almost 10 Years Later, My Story of being a medical student in NYC during the 9-11 WTC Attacks still hits home

wtc memorial lights 726357 197x300 Almost 10 Years Later, My Story of being a medical student in NYC during the 9 11 WTC Attacks still hits home

I recently came across my first published article in Medicine from 2001. Ironically it was not a trial on Osteoarthritis or a breakthrough new therapy. In fact it had little to do with medicine or science at all. I was a medical student rotating in the Bronx Emergency Room when I woke up following a shift on September 11th, 2001 and the world was flipped upside down and forever changed.

Suddenly finding myself in “Ground Zero” abandoning any rationale & out of my league as a med student with a hard hat trying to remove heavy rubble & see through the blinding smoke; I was fueled to do whatever I could to help another fellow human being. That day changed me forever. I saw the absolute worst side of human nature yet also saw an unprecedented will of Americans to unselfishly help one another at any expense. I included this article because it shares a unique story of my experience that many can relate to.

Attached is my published article from The D.O., which still gives me chills reading. “Trying To Help”: Medical Student Reports
