Dr Steven Sampson lectures to 175 International Sonosite executives on the clinical benefits of musculoskeletal ultrasound.

A recent trend among patients seeking new treatments is a phenomenon that Dr. Sampson, the founder of Orthohealing Center and an expert in the field of orthobiologics and regenerative medicine, has termed “pioneer patients.” Dr. Sampson, at the Sonosite Worldwide Managers Meeting in Palos Verdes, CA, presented his clinical experience to 175 international managers in using bedside musculoskeletal ultrasound. He says that patients are not satisfied with the current status quo as far as the technology available to diagnose and treat orthopedic injuries.

We are seeing a revolution in technology that is being driven by patient to patient marketing. Dr Sampson and the Orthohealing Center were amongst the earliest in the country to integrate this cost effective “hands on” technology and train physicians from all around the world on this and other new treatments utilizing cutting edge technology.

Patients are seeking out further options, believing there must be more treatments medical professionals can offer. Furthermore, ”vision/action” patients are fueling new growth, as they require physical activity for sanity, balance and need to exercise to recover from injuries quickly. While the technology is utilized by elite professional athletes such as the NBA players, it is also available to the everyday patients who experience pain during daily activities such as transferring form a chair, standing, using stairs or sleeping on their side.

Using Radiofrequency Ablation to treat SI Joint Pain featured in this month’s “Pain Pathways” Magazine

joint dysfunction clip image001 Using Radiofrequency Ablation to treat SI Joint Pain featured in this month’s “Pain Pathways” Magazine

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain afflicts millions of Americans every year, and is thought to be the main culprit in up to 30% of chronic back pain sufferers.  It continues to be widely underdiagnosed by many physicians in part because MRIs of the low back typically do not focus on this area and therefore show nothing abnormal.  Most patients with the condition feel hopeless when conventional treatments including physical therapy and steroid injections do not provide sustained relief.

As outlined in the Winter 2011 issue of Pain Pathways magazine, Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation offers new hope.  In this procedure, a probe is inserted near the area of the SI joint and its tip is heated – deadening the surrounding nerve tissue and offering substantial and more prolonged pain relief.   A similar procedure can be performed for nerves in the low back (medial branch nerves which innervate facet joints of the lumbar spine).

We have performed numerous RF ablations at the Orthohealing Center with exceptional results , and are excited to see word spread about this innovative procedure!

Dr. Steven Sampson to lecture on Joint Health at Stephen S. Wise Temple on Monday, November 7, 2011

Monday, October 31st, 2011 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

As we age, we begin to notice new aches and pains that we never had before.  For many individuals, quality of life becomes compromised because joints are not cooperating as well as we would like them to.  Like tires on a car, our joints are susceptible to wear and tear over time, commonly known as “osteoarthritis”.   Conventional wisdom reminds us that if we do not take steps to promote healthy joints, our ability to remain active well into our “golden” years will be seriously challenged. Dr. Steven Sampson will share cutting-edge therapies to treat both symptoms and illness, and discuss what role we can play in maximizing our health and living to our full potential.  Please join for an informative lecture and discussion on Monday, November 7, 2011 at Stephen S. Wise Temple.stephen wise logo Dr. Steven Sampson to lecture on Joint Health at Stephen S. Wise Temple on Monday, November 7, 2011

New Study shows PRP Platelet Rich Plasma injections are superior to Hyaluronic Acid Injections for knee osteoarthritis

Monday, October 3rd, 2011 by Steven Sampson D.O.

knee pain dyn 150x150 New Study shows PRP Platelet Rich Plasma injections are superior to Hyaluronic Acid Injections for knee osteoarthritis

A new study from Italy published in Arthroscopy, showed superiority in PRP injections over the standardof care with hyaluronic acid injections.

Hyaluronic acid injections are currently FDA approved for the management of knee osteoarthritis and are recognized by most major insurance companies as a last alternative to a total knee replacement following failed corticosteroid injection & physical therapy, activity modification, diet, medications, bracing, etc.

15o patients were enrolled and were followed up at 2mo & 6mo. The study demonstrated  superior improvements in the PRP treated group that lasted longer. The study added insights which included that younger and more active patients with less cartilage damage did better than those with more advanced arthritis & activity restrictions.

We expect the next realm of clinical trials to includecombining PRP with hyaluronic acid for synergistic effects. Overall the data is scarce on PRP therapy. However every month new articles are coming out, most often favorably.  This info is helping us understand the disease process of OA as well.

Scientists from Barcelona, Spain visit Orthohealing Center for tendon research

Friday, September 23rd, 2011 by Steven Sampson D.O.

spain2 e1316823195611 224x300 Scientists from Barcelona, Spain visit Orthohealing Center for tendon research

We were honored to have worldwide leading scientists in clinical research for tendons visit the Orthohealing Center this week. Chronic tendon injuries termed “Tendinopathies” are stubborn to heal due to many factors including repitive activity & poor blood flow.

With our new understanding that there is not a strong “inflammatory response”, comes a whole realm of treatments to directly target this disease. It’s critical that patients have the appropriate nutritional & cellular balance to facilitate healing.

Scientists at Bioberica are leading the way in tendon research with innovative products to influence healing in unimaginable ways. We hope to conduct data to better understand this perplexing  yet frequently occuring condition.

Thank you to our patients for allowing the Spanish research team to observe bedside interactions.

Dr Sampson, a recognized international expert in PRP discussed his experiences & how PRP is not just for elite athletes but is being used for patients who are non-athletes & have painful joints affecting everyday activity . More & more in the media we are seeing exposure of PRP therapy. PRP is a gateway therapy in Orthobiologics that is introducing this therapeutic realm to Dr’s & patients.

Numerous studies are underway to learn best how & when to apply this treatment. For certain, some studies will go both ways pro Vs con & we need more natural based alternatives to address the root of orthopedic problems. The broadcast was in Portuguese and reached millions of Brazilians. To download the broadcast visit our website

We recently concluded our second annual The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI) Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) symposium, hosted & moderated by Dr Steven Sampson at the Orthohealing Center . This years event was incredibly exciting with appx 40 visiting Physicians from 9 different countries.

The lectures were phenominal with physicians presenting their data on elite athletes & on non-athletic patients suffering with joint arthritis. The two day event featured hands on ultrasound workstations in small groups.

It was an excellent opportunity for like minded physicians to network & collaborate on projects in the future. In summary many sudies will emerge on PRP, and many appear highly favorable. Without a doubt some studies will not be positive & will only help us refine the indications for PRP & it’s role as a treatment option. The shortcomings that we see with PRP will only drive us to find other natural based therapies in regenerative medicine to accelerate healing using new technology & maxinizing the body’s natural ability to heal.
