Brandon Roy Comes Out of Retirement to Join the Minnesota Timberwolves and Attributes his Comeback to Platelet Rich Plasma Injections for his Chronic Knee Pain

brandon roy timberwolves Brandon Roy Comes Out of Retirement to Join the Minnesota Timberwolves and Attributes his Comeback to Platelet Rich Plasma Injections for his Chronic Knee PainThis past Tuesday, October 2nd marked a milestone for Minnesota Timberwolves guard Brandon Roy. It was the first time the celebrated former All-Star participated in training camp practice in over two years. Debilitating knee pain due to severe arthritis had affected his performance, and when knee surgeries did not provide relief, he retired from the game. Six months after his retirement, he underwent platelet rich plasma injections which gave him enough relief to make a comeback that few had expected.

SI.com reports Roy stated ” ‘Wow, this can’t be real, my knees feel great,’ and that in the ensuing months without setbacks he learned to trust that this is more than a temporary rejuvenation.”

While similar blood-spinning procedures have been reported to provide significant relief for other professional athletes such as Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum, Alex Rodriguez, Tiger Woods, and Fred Couples, they have also been used on thousands of non-athletes including arthritic joints and non-healing tendon injuries in weekend warriors. The doctors of the Orthohealing Center are pioneers in regenerative procedures such as platelet rich plasma and are proud to offer this treatment for those who “want to get back into the game”.

bloomberg news PRP Platelet Rich Plasma Blood Spinning featured in Bloomberg NewsPRP Platelet Rich Plasma Blood Spinning featured in Bloomberg News. After numerous athletes like Tiger Woods, Hines Ward, Alex Rodriguez & Kobe Bryant have received regenerative injections derived from their own blood, word is spreading to the millions of Americans suffering from degenerative conditions. As a whole we are seeing a movement towards less invasive treatments like surgery with a “transition from the scalpel to the needle an from the operating room to the bedside” Orthobiologics represents an exciting new realm of potential that may target a disease process rather than mask the symptoms like cortisone or anti-inflammatories. Research is mounting on tendon & cartilage injuries, suggesting that therapies like PRP are here to stay.  Treatments like PRP are opening a door for further more sophisticated and advanced cell based therapies to maximize natural healing. We will continue to update on the latest studies that emerge in Biologics.

Los Angeles Dodgers’ All-Star Matt Kemp Expected Back on the Field Following a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

Following the growing trend of using regenerative medicine to heal and return to playing sooner, the LA Times has reported that Matt Kemp has joined the list of other star athletes from multiple sports (Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez, Tiger Woods) who have reaped the benefits of blood spinning injections such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

The All-Star slugger was placed on the disabled list Monday with a strained left hamstring. The following day, he had his hamstring injected with platelet-rich plasma to help promote healing.

He is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on May 29 and will help add firepower to an already strong Dodger team who leads the league with a 28-13 record.

At the Orthohealing Center, we have treated both professional athletes and weekend warriors with similar hamstring issues with encouraging results. Generally, hamstrings have limited blood flow and are challenging to heal. PRP gives this region a boost to accelerate healing naturally.

Alex Rodriguez says Knee Pain nearly forced Kobe Bryant to retire before his Blood Spinning Procedure

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez told reporters this weekend that Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant considered retiring after last season because the pain in his right knee was nearly intolerable.  Bryant’s blood spinning procedure on his knee allowed Bryant’s career to continue, Rodriguez said. The procedure, involves drawing blood from the patient’s arm and then drawing platelets from that blood. The platelets are then injected into the injured area to stimulate tissue repair.

“I know that he was hurting before, almost even thinking about retirement, that’s how much pain he was under.” Rodriguez said, repoorted by the LA Times.

The treatment seems to have worked. After playing just 33.9 minutes per game last season—the lowest since his second year in the NBA—Bryant is averaging 38.2 minutes this season and is scoring a league-high 28.4 points per game, up from 25.3 last season.

Per reports, Bryant recommedned the treatment for Rodriguez.  “Now the thing is, if I can play as well as Kobe, we’re in business,” Rodriguez said.  “My knee does feel a lot better,” he added.

The Orthohealing Center is excited that Regenerative Medicine injections are reviving the careers of top professional athletes and is proud to offer these procedures including platelet rich plasma (PRP) to keep our patients, whether professional athletes or weekend warriors, pain free and active!

NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas feeling better following blood spinning injections to his knees and hips; Lakers express interest and attend his workouts in Los Angeles

Monday, February 13th, 2012 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

Three-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas recently underwent the same regenerative blood spinning treatments on his knees that the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant and Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez went through.  According to sources close to the situation, he has worked his way into shape and is feeling better than he has in years after having the injections, now popularly referred to in the media as “Kobe Therapy”.  Arenas also had the procedure done on his hips as a preemptive measure that is often used on athletes who, like Arenas, have a history of knee problems.act gilbert arenas NBA All Star Gilbert Arenas feeling better following blood spinning injections to his knees and hips; Lakers express interest and attend his workouts in Los Angeles

Arenas conducted a workout in the Los Angeles area Sunday that was attended by Lakers officials.  He could become a well-timed addition for a Lakers team badly in need of scoring help and guard depth.

The Orthohealing Center is proud to be a world  leader in the field of regenerative medicine, offering Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections for a wide array of injuries to both elite athletes and people with pain that just won’t go away.

Platelet Rich Plasma featured on NPR National Public Radio

Friday, March 26th, 2010 by Steven Sampson D.O.

NPR Platelet Rich Plasma featured on NPR National Public RadioNPRrecently featured PRP discussing it’s use in orthopedics & sports medicine. Interestingly via professional athletes, the community is learning more about emerging therapies that are driving change in medicine. Hopefully indirectly the increased awareness of PRP use in professional sports will promote further studies so that more patients at home can benefit as well.
