Knee pain can result from a variety of causes including mechanical factors, overuse injury, and trauma. A comprehensive history and physical is required to determine the cause of a patient’s complaints. Frequently if a patient isn’t responding to a treatment plan or if there is significant injury noted on exam, further diagnostic workup is required. Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound is useful in providing real time inexpensive evaluation of most ligaments and tendons and detects fluid accumulation. MRI is superior in demonstrating meniscus tears and deep structures like the ACL and PCL.
