TOBI: The Orthobiologic Institute Faculty Publish Article on PRP for Osteoarthritis:

A new article published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by TOBI: The Orthobiologic Institute faculty, Smith and Sellon, discusses the intra-articular application of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for Osteoarthritis. PRP is rapidly emerging as a potentially viable option for Osteoarthritis treatment. The article provides a clear and concise review of current research for intra-articular PRP treatment, and the current recommendations for treatment protocol. The Image to the left is an example of an ultrasound-guided PRP injection into the knee joint.  Below are some of the highlighted points from the article.

  •  Many studies and controlled trials have shown PRP to be a safe and effective treatment      options for Osteoarthritis.
  • Intra-articular PRP has similar efficacy to hyaluronic acid.
  • PRP may potentially be more effective than hyaluronic acid in younger, active patients with low-grade osteoarthritis.
  • Treatment benefits typically last 6-9 months.
  • Future investigations need to analyze individual variables in PRP treatment and work to determine the optimal PRP formula and protocol.

As research continues to emerge on the use of PRP for Osteoarthritis, the future continues to look promising. Although many of the specifics and variables of PRP therapy need to be researched further to advance the field, preliminary results have exhibited much potential. Collaboration and research networks such as TOBI: The Orthobiologic Institute are constantly sharing ideas and working to advance the field of regenerative orthopedics and Platelet Rich Plasma.
