More & More Clinics beginning to offer Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Therapy

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

atlanta dBusiness news announced that an Atlanta clinic is now beginning to offer PRP injections. Dr Steven Sampson was referenced in the article describing the science behind PRP.

More & more clinics in the US & Abroad are offering biologic based treatments to naturally accelerate the healing process. We have been performing PRP injections for nearly 4 years now, with encouraging results. However hopefully many of these clinics performing PRP procedures will publish literature so that we can all learn together which particular injuries may respond best. Currently many organizations are working on a clinical guidlineson PRP in efforts of creating a standard to adhere by. Unfortunately there is great variability with platelet concentrations, injection technique with & without guidance of ultrasound or x-ray and frequency of treatment & combination with other therapies synvisc/supartz, Traumeel etc.

We are now offering a training seminar to encourage research & proper training in platelet Rich Plasma therapy.

Dr Steven Sampson Lectures in Palm Springs on PRP and tendon and cartilage treatments

Monday, June 14th, 2010

I just returned from Palm Springs where I spoke at the 20th annual Practical applications in Sports medicine conference. There were over 200 in attendance which was terrific. The crowd made up mostly Athletic Trainers who work for universities, local schools & sports teams as well as Physical Therapists & Orthopedic Surgeons plus one cadaver.  There were a few interesting points of note.

  • There is a new phenemonon where kids are just playing one sport all year round rather than participating in tennis, football, baseball, & basketball over different seasons. This has created many repitive overuse injuries & is leading more childern to surgery & long term musculoskeletal injuries.
  • When I asked the room, how many people have heard of PRP, almost everyone raised their hand. Stark contrast to 4 yrs ago when I had to explain it to everyone, now patients come asking for an ultrasound or PRP injection.
  • Many cases of knee pain when there is a negative work up, the Hips must be evaluated further. I have seen where patients complain of lateral knee pain (from the ilio-tibial band) & we order a hip radiograph and discover severe hip arthritis.

Orthohealing Center Dr Steven Sampson interviewed by Massachusetts General Hospital Proto Magazine on Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Arthritis

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

ProtoMassachusetts General Hospital’s magazine Proto, recently interviewed Dr Steven Sampson of the Orthohealing Center regarding the use of PRP for osteoarthritis. Major hospitals like Mass General are becoming increasingly aware of the emerging field of orthobiologics that includes PRP and stem cell based therapies. Studies are showing that PRP may potentially reduce infection rates in surgeries like cardiac bypass(CABG)  which can save lots of expenses for hospitals and improve outcomes. Another pioneer in , Elizaveta Kon of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Bologna Italy recently completed a studyshowing PRP to be more effective than another OA treatment, hyaluronic acid. Dr Sampson’s PRP knee arthritis study is pending publication.

Dr Steven Sampson visits Innovative Orthopedist Dr Alan Lazar in Florida to observe cutting edge procedures

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

lazar 2

Dr Alan Lazar is a unique Orthopaedist in that he offers a multitude of options for his patients both surgically & non-operatively. Dr Lazar has been doing PRP injections both in the operating room & at his office. Dr Lazar has been creating some innovative protocols for osteoarthritis of the knee. For example initially he may do a micro fracture surgery under arthroscopy (small holes are made into cartilage under a scope to promote bone bleeding & release of stem cells & regeneration of tissue. Afterwards he adds PRP & possible BMAC (bone marrow concentrate off the hip or stem cells from fat.

Very interesting work. We predict that more & more docs will move from PRP to stem cell based therapies which has more potential for significant pathology. A special thanks to Dr Lazar & his friendly staff for welcoming us & introducing us to his patients. Dr Lazar is authoring a book that highlights non-surgical treatments and is due out soon.

Ivanhoe’s reports are broadcast in 250 markets reaching 80 million U.S. households.

Once again the increased awareness hopefully will create more interest in the community & drive further research which is needed to determine which particular patients & their diagnoses will improve best from this early generation of regenerative medicine. Soon we expect more stories to emerge on adult stem cell therapy in orthopaedics which is starting to see increased use in the US.
