Strontium Ranelate Supplementation in Osteoarthritis Treatment:

Strontium is an element on the Periodic Table, which is very similar to Calcium. It is known to be easily absorbed by the gut and incorporated into bone and tooth enamel much in the same way as Calcium.  When in the form Strontium Ranelate (Strontium Salt), it is known to increase both bone formation and decrease bone breakdown.  This makes it a very potent strengthening agent of bone and an effective treatment for post-menopausal Osteoporosis. However, in recent years several large studies have evaluated its use in treatment of Osteoarthritis.

One of the largest and most recent studies published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, examined different doses of Strontium Ranelate in comparison to a placebo for 1371 patients suffering from knee Osteoarthritis over a 3 year period.  X ray evidence illustrated decreased progression of arthritic changes in the patients supplemented with Strontium Ranelate. In addition, patients taking Strontium Ranelate experienced more pain relief and improved physical function in comparison to patients who went untreated.  Although more research is needed to fully investigate the effectiveness of Strontium Ranelate for OA, early research is showing promising results.
