NEW Study Shows PEMF Therapy has Positive Effects on Pain and Function in Osteoarthritis:

A recent article published in the International Journal of Medical Science and Public Health examined the effects of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy on pain and function in patients suffering from Osteoarthritis. PEMF therapy has long been used for a myriad of musculoskeletal conditions, from non-healing bone fractures, to neuropathies, and even enhanced recovery from surgery and intense exercise. This article adds to the mounting evidence suggesting PEMF therapy as a potentially viable adjunct therapy for treating Osteoarthritis pain and fucntion.

The study selected 20 patients and divided them equally into 2 groups. Group A received PEMF therapy with a frequency of 15 hz for 30 minutes, 6 days/week for 2 weeks, and Group B, which received conventional physical therapy.  Both groups also performed quad strengthening exercises and stretches.

The results showed that pain scores were significantly reduced in the PEMF treatment group. In addition, functional scores also showed improvements in favor of the PEMF group.  The study concluded that PEMF therapy reduces pain and improves physical function in participants with knee Osteoarthritis.  Although more research is needed until PEMF therapy is a mainstay in Osteoarthritis treatment, the preliminary results, including this most recent publication, illustrate a promising future for the use of PEMF therapy in Osteoarthritis.
