New Study Suggests Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Shows Promise in the Repair of Brain-Spinal Cord Injuries

Friday, July 20th, 2012 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

brain New Study Suggests Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Shows Promise in the Repair of Brain Spinal Cord InjuriesA new study published in Neuro Report sheds light on the promising use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in treating brain and spinal cord injuries.

Although PRP has been used for years to treat a wide array of orthopedic injuries including tendons, ligaments, and joints, it’s application in other medical fields is the subject of numerous research projects around the world. While the benefits of PRP in orthopedic regenerative therapies are now widely accepted, the regenerative effects of PRP on spinal cord injury had previously never been reported before this new study.

PRP is rich in numerous growth factors that are associated with the repair processes after injury to the central nervous system which is consists of the brain and spinal cord. This study examined the ability of PRP to enhance the growth of nerve tissues and to identify which growth factors were responsible for that growth. The study suggested that addition of PRP promoted nerve axon growth, particularly through mechanisms associated with growth factors known as IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1) and VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor).

We are hopeful that new evidence such as this will open the door for other spine applications of PRP such as epidural injections instead of using steroids. While more studies are needed and while we are likely years away from potentially applying these treatments in humans for neurolgic problems such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or spinal cord injury, it is encouraging to see new studies that suggest the healing and reparative effects of PRP in other fields of medicine!

Evidence of the growing use of PRP Platelet Rich Plasma therapy & regenerative injections in orthopedics, Dr Steven Sampson was an expert panelist & speaker on the safety of PRP. More & more physicians are integrating PRP into practice & standards and training requirements were discussed. In general PRP use in various medical fields has been ongoing for 25 years. It’s safety profile was discussed & reviewed. Other Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) treatments were reviewed as well.  Interestingly, when OHC first began these injections there was little public awareness, however by now most Physicians and the public are familiar with this realm of therapy now. CAM therapies are one of the most rapidly growing sectors in healthcare as patients are seeking out more natural alternatives when western medicine may not provide all the answers.

The seminar features world leaders in cutting edge medicine along with musculoskeletal ultrasound training, education, and a cadaver lab. www.prpseminar.com.

Worldwide, PRP & biologic based injections like Regenokine, Bone Marrow concentrate, etc are growing. More and more evidence is emerging so that we can better understand which patients may benefit from these interventions & which may not. PRP use is growing in cardiovascular disease as well to address an epidemic in the US & abroad.

Germany/ Regenokine Blood Spinning Biologic Orthopedic treatments in NY Times

Friday, July 13th, 2012 by Steven Sampson D.O.

Germany/ Regenokine Blood Spinning Biologic Orthopedic treatments in NY TimesAfter word first broke out years ago about Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in the NY times following Super Bowl success story Hines Ward, the media has had a fascination & love hate relationship.  As with any new therapy controlled trials are needed. However when looking at a lot of what we do in mainstream orthopedics , there is in fact very sparse data to rely on. Take for example epidural steroid injections for sciatica & low back pain. While tens of thousands are performed regularly to provide desperate relief, there limited studies if any verifying its use.  Many studies have shown that there is no direct correlation with pain & the degree of x-ray findings. In fact often the less painful knee in a patient  may look worse on radiographs. This goes back to the idea that the practice medicine is an art & a science.

Now Several years later hundreds of physicians are implementing biologic treatments on thousands and thousands of orthopedic injuries worldwide. Most can agree that our body contains the ingredients & capacity to self heal as it does so throughout our lifetime. However at times it gets stuck, when an otherwise healthy athlete or weekend warrior that has never had a setback can’t get over the hump.

Skeptics point out there are limited studies on treatments like PRP, however in reality this is simply not true. Every month in a listing of peer reviewed journals  internationally at least 10 new  published PRP Orthopedic articles emerge. For perhaps the most comprehensive listing of orthopedic publications on PRP click here.

Most studies have been positive refining this promising therapy that is by no means a panacea.  Most likely however we will ultimately look back on PRP & Regenokine as  the gateway to a new field: “Orthobiologics.”

Through the sensationilazation of athletes & success stories of dramatic results, comes motivation form pioneering patients to drive change in the stagnant realm of orthopedics. Many docs do not embrace change & are not staying current on the literature & discussions at the leading symposiums for their respected professional societies. Biologic medicine has become the hottest topic around. We are just beginning to understand osteoarthritis which appears to be centrally linked to the immune system which then triggers inflammatory proteins or cytokines. Many therapies like PRP, Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC), Regenokine are geared towards blocking those cytokines and repairing tissue.  While patients may be travelling overseas for regenerative therapies, we must not turn away from this field and ignore it. But rather as Physicians of United States, we have been looked to as leading the way & we are now falling behind quickly. Clearly some regulation is warranted to protect patients, manage their expectations & ensure safety.

Unquestionably  are faced with an epidemic of increased arthritis with the boomer generation & increased activity & injuries. The status quo of cortisone, anti-inflammatories, and surgery if these fail just does not “cut” it.

Yes we must be optimistically guarded but we are beginning to better utilize our body’s natural potential to self repair. Treatments like PRP, Bone Marrow Concentrate, Regenokine are improving on a regular basis with sound fundamental science & a growing population of content patients.

This weekend some of the most respected physicians from around the world will gather in Los Angeles, CA  for the 3rd annual Orthobiolgic Institute Regenerative Medicine Symposium.  The community of pioneering patients and forward thinking physicians is growing. Agreed that more studies are needed before this therapy can be available more readily, but evidence is mounting every day.

Korean Study Finds Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) More Favorable Than Prolotherapy for Treatment of Shoulder Pain Due to Biceps Tendonitis

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

bicep Korean Study Finds Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) More Favorable Than Prolotherapy for Treatment of Shoulder Pain Due to Biceps TendonitisA new study out of a Korean Medical Journal compared patient outcomes with two different regenerative therapies for the treatment of proximal biceps tendinitis.

Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy (PRP) and Prolotherapy are both commonly used to treat a variety of shoulder ailments. Biceps tendonitis, or inflammation of the biceps tendon, is a common condition which can be debilitating when severe. The study evaluated 100 patients with severe biceps tendonitis without relief to conservative management. Patients were divided equally into two groups. The first group received PRP therapy; the second group received prolotherapy. While there was no significant difference between the groups in the first month after the procedure, the PRP group showed significantly more improvement in the 3rd, 6th, and 12th months after the procedure.

While PRP and prolotherapy have both long been effective in treating tendon and ligament injuries non-surgically, it appears that PRP may be more reliable for maintaining effective results over a longer period of time for certain conditions such as biceps tendonitis.

The Orthohealing Center takes pride in offering our patients a variety of non-surgical options, including both PRP and Prolotherapy, for treating a wide array of common orthopedic joint, tendon, and ligament problems.

Researchers in Israel Make Medical History by Transforming Skin Stem Cells from Heart-Disease Patients into Healthy Heart Tissue

Monday, July 2nd, 2012 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

ABC News recently featured a story on a group of Israeli scientists who have been able to transform human stem cells from the skin into new, healthy, beating heart tissue.

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, is the first of its kind. Skin cells from patients aged 51-61 were transformed into healthy heart muscle cells. The new heart muscle cells, cardiomyocytes, grew in a lab dish with existing heart tissues, and within 24-48 hours, both kinds of tissue were beating together as one.

“What is new and exciting about our research is that we have shown that it’s possible to take skin cells from an elderly patient with advanced heart failure and end up with his own beating cells in a laboratory dish that are healthy and young – the equivalent to the stage of his heart cells when he was just born,” said Dr. Lior Gepstein, lead researcher at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel.

While the future is bright with this monumental discovery, it will likely take 5-10 years before these advances can be promoted to clinical trials. Also, while evidence is mounting  in heart disease, more research is needed on regenerative injections for joint pain which is affecting Americans in staggering numbers as a result of the “boomer generation” being increasingly active.  Nonetheless, the thought of using one’s own stem cells to treat heart disease and many other ailments has kept the world of regenerative medicine “beating” with excitement.

New Study in “Foot and Ankle International” Supports the Use of Platelet Rich Plasma in Treating Chronic Achilles Tendonitis

Monday, July 2nd, 2012 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

299101 2828 10 New Study in “Foot and Ankle International” Supports the Use of Platelet Rich Plasma in Treating Chronic Achilles TendonitisIn a new study published in Foot and Ankle International, researchers have found that Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is effective in treating chronic Achilles tendinitis.

Out of 30 patients studied with chronic cases of Achilles tendinosis resistant to traditional non-operative management, 28 patients (93%) had clinical success with PRP therapy . Not only did these patients improve clinically, but so did their tendon structure! MRI and ultrasound studies were completed for all patients pre-treatment and at 6 months post-treatment. Abnormalities present in the Achilles tendon on MRI/ultrasound studies resolved in 27 of 29 patients at 6 months post-treatment. This suggests that PRP not only helps with symptom relief, but actually heals the tendon itself. This supports what scientists see in a lab, where PRP has been added to tendon cells (tenocytes), causing the cells to multiply in number.

We are excited to see this new study added to the list of numerous scientific publications that support the positive effects of PRP for joint, tendon, and ligament problems.
