We are thrilled to announce that Dr Steven Sampson will be presenting research at one of the world’s largest and most prestigious gathering focusing on Tendinopathy in Vancouver Sept 27-29. Dr Steven Sampson & Dr Danielle Aufiero collaborated with Dr Victor Ibrahim of Washington DC to present unique research on PRP ultrasound guided injection to spinal cord injury patients with painful biceps tendons from wheelchair athletics.

Tracy McGrady’s Knee Pain Relief from Regenokine Blood Injections Featured on ABC Nightline

In the last few years, there has been a great deal of media attention surrounding professional athletes receiving biologic regenerative therapies such as Regenokine and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). 

Elite athletes from multiple sports such as Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriquez, and Fred Couples have all had significant success from their respective treatments. ABC Nightline recently featured the spotlight on Tracy McGrady, a seven-time NBA All-Star who went from being one the greatest basketball players in the world to a virtual role player following a debilitating knee injury 2 years ago.

When two surgeries gave no relief, McGrady followed the lead of stars before him and traveled to Germany for the Regenokine procedure – a therapy which uses a patient’s own blood for its healing properties. Currently, it is still unclear whether or not Regenokine is FDA approved in the United States because the blood is incubated overnight before it is administered. PRP, on the other hand, is a similar type of therapy which has been used safely for over 20 years with hundreds of publications supporting its use . 

While treatment of elite athletes is shedding light on these promising therapies, it’s the everyday patient with back, hip, and knee pain that may benefit most to reduce pain and get back to living a normal pain-free life. At the Orthohealing Center, our doctors have treated both professional athletes and weekend warriors with similar issues with encouraging results.

After a long wait we are excited to announce that we are one of a few clinics in the world to offer perhaps the best musculoskeletal ultrasound machine available. This state of the art equipment offers enhanced visualization of tendon fibers and soft tissue. In the past when we zoom into a tendon for a closer look it would get blurry or distorted. Now with the Sonosite Edge, the image gets sharper as we zoom in!

This will result in better image quality which in our experience enhances patient care. With the use of ultrasound to guide precise needle injections, we have seen less reported pain from procedures & better results. This evidence is supported in the literature as well.

The use of ultrasound while mainstream in Europe is now becoming the standard of care in the US, primarily driven by patients demanding the best.

Regenerative Photonic Therapy: Using the Healing Power of of Light and Laser to Treat Pain

For over 40 years, therapeutic laser treatments have been used in clinical practice all around the world to treat a variety of muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint coditions. These laser and LED light therapies have been known to aid in tissue healing at the cellular level by increasing cellular energy (ATP) and protein synthesis.

The Orthohealing Center is proud to be hosting Dr. Natasha Salansky, PhD, DAc at our clinic this week as we feature a new state-of-the-art treatment called “Regenerative Photonic Therapy”, or “RPT”. Dr. Norman Salansky, PhD and Dr. Natasha Salansky have spent over 25 years researching this phenomenon with research grants from the Canadian government. This non-surgical, non-invasive treatment is thought to have higher efficacy beyond therapeutic lasers for treating sports injuries and chronic pain.

RPT is based on the healing power of special forms of LED and laser light that is aimed to improve blood flow to injured tissue. Increase in blood flow helps regulate abnormal inflammation and has been used to reduce pain and inflammation in numerous conditions such as neck and back pain, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, and knee pain among others.

When used in combination with regenerative injection therapies such as Platelet Rich Plasma or Bone Marrow Concentrate injections, RPT can substantially accelerate recovery while reducing post-procedure inflammatory discomfort.

Platelet Rich Plasma and Bone Marrow Concentrate injections are becoming increasingly popular in the world of Orthopedics as a safe and effective alternative to surgery.

Recently, the use of Fibrin as an addition to these regenerative injections has gained attention as way to increase response to the healing properties of these treatments.

Fibrin is the body’s first response to injury and pain. It is an insoluble protein shaped like long threads which interlace to form a thin mesh around an injured area. This mesh then serves as a scaffold for platelets to attach and adhere. When used in regenerative injections, fibrin is isolated and purified from the patient’s own platelet poor plasma (PPP), which used to be discarded before researchers realized the healing power of fibrin! Given in combination with platelet rich plasma or bone marrow concentrate injections, the addition of fibrin offers a more robust response of healing and tissue regeneration.
