Dr. Steven Sampson to lecture on Joint Health at Stephen S. Wise Temple on Monday, November 7, 2011

Monday, October 31st, 2011 by Beny Charchian, M.D., M.S.

As we age, we begin to notice new aches and pains that we never had before.  For many individuals, quality of life becomes compromised because joints are not cooperating as well as we would like them to.  Like tires on a car, our joints are susceptible to wear and tear over time, commonly known as “osteoarthritis”.   Conventional wisdom reminds us that if we do not take steps to promote healthy joints, our ability to remain active well into our “golden” years will be seriously challenged. Dr. Steven Sampson will share cutting-edge therapies to treat both symptoms and illness, and discuss what role we can play in maximizing our health and living to our full potential.  Please join for an informative lecture and discussion on Monday, November 7, 2011 at Stephen S. New Study shows PRP Platelet Rich Plasma injections are superior to Hyaluronic Acid Injections for knee osteoarthritis

knee pain dyn 150x150 New Study shows PRP Platelet Rich Plasma injections are superior to Hyaluronic Acid Injections for knee osteoarthritis

A new study from Italy published in Arthroscopy, showed superiority in PRP injections over the standardof care with hyaluronic acid injections.

Hyaluronic acid injections are currently FDA approved for the management of knee osteoarthritis and are recognized by most major insurance companies as a last alternative to a total knee replacement following failed corticosteroid injection & physical therapy, activity modification, diet, medications, bracing, etc.

15o patients were enrolled and were followed up at 2mo & 6mo. The study demonstrated  superior improvements in the PRP treated group that lasted longer. The study added insights which included that younger and more active patients with less cartilage damage did better than those with more advanced arthritis & activity restrictions.

We expect the next realm of clinical trials to includecombining PRP with hyaluronic acid for synergistic effects. Overall the data is scarce on PRP therapy. However every month new articles are coming out, most often favorably.  This info is helping us understand the disease process of OA as well.
