Following our initial publication of PRP Therapy for knee osteoarthritis in Dec 2010, several studies are underway looking at larger sample sizes to determine if PRP is safe & effective for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. In a study by Wang & Cugat, 808 patients received 3 PRP injections at 2 week intervals. The study demonstrated improved function, quality of life & pain with no adverse events reported.
An Australian based Co Adistem, Just announced it’s ethical approval for a head to head study of PRP to Synvisc One (A commonly used US FDA approved Lubricant for knee arthritis). lastly, Dr Brian Cole, the Chicago Bulls Team Doc & leading cartilage researcher is conducting a trial with Arthrex/ACP injections for knee osteoarthritis.
More recently, industry leaders in orthobiologics are recognizing the tremendous need for alternative treatments to surgery in a population that will see an increase for total knee replacements skyrocket 670% by 2030. We expect to see more & more trials with larger patient #’s and better science to emerge in the near future.

Dr Steven Sampson was recently interviewed by renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon Brian Cole MD from Chicago, IL on ESPN Radio 1000. Dr Cole is the Section Head of the Cartilage Research Program at Rush University Medical Center and the Cartilage Restoration Center at Rush, specializing in restoration of articular cartilage and meniscus injuries. He actively serves as the team physician for the Chicago Bulls, Co-team doc for the Chicago White Sox, & Depaul University in Chicago.
Dr Steven Sampson was interviewed specifically about how valuable the integration of musculoskjeletal ultrasound has been in clinical practice to rapidly & cost effectively provide accurate diagnosis & treatment. It’s important for people to be aware that this technology is not reserved only for pro athletes that we treat; but i savailable for our patients with everyday pain!

Dr Steven Sampson was interviewed Sunday July 3rd by National Brazilian Radio Station Band News FM. Dr Sampson, a recognized international expert in PRP discussed his experiences & how PRP is not just for elite athletes but is being used for patients who are non-athletes & have painful joints affecting everyday activity . More & more in the media we are seeing exposure of PRP therapy. PRP is a gateway therapy in Orthobiologics that is introducing this therapeutic realm to Dr’s & patients.
Numerous studies are underway to learn best how & when to apply this treatment. For certain, some studies will go both ways pro Vs con & we need more natural based alternatives to address the root of orthopedic problems. The broadcast was in Portuguese and reached millions of Brazilians. To download the broadcast visit our website

We recently concluded our second annual The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI) Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) symposium, hosted & moderated by Dr Steven Sampson at the Orthohealing Center . This years event was incredibly exciting with appx 40 visiting Physicians from 9 different countries.
The lectures were phenominal with physicians presenting their data on elite athletes & on non-athletic patients suffering with joint arthritis. The two day event featured hands on ultrasound workstations in small groups.
It was an excellent opportunity for like minded physicians to network & collaborate on projects in the future. In summary many sudies will emerge on PRP, and many appear highly favorable. Without a doubt some studies will not be positive & will only help us refine the indications for PRP & it’s role as a treatment option. The shortcomings that we see with PRP will only drive us to find other natural based therapies in regenerative medicine to accelerate healing using new technology & maxinizing the body’s natural ability to heal.

We were excited to recently have visiting Physicians; Dr’s Hajime Utsunomiya, Mikihiko Hattori, Hidetoshi Hayashi from Japan as well as Dr Ali Algahtani from Saudi Arabia. We enjoyed learning about their practice and plans of launching PRP Platelet Rich Plasma treatment centers in their respective communities.
We hope to collaborate in further research projects together in regenerative medicine as we have done with the many other docs who have visited our clinic in Los Angeles, CA. Special thanks to our patients for allowing them to shadow procedures.

I was thrilled to participate in an incredibly insightful seminar led by Physician’s from The Mayo Clinic leading the way in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound; Dr Jay Smith & Dr Jon Finnoff. I had the opportunity to meet many leading docs from around the world & exchange protocols and plant seeds for research collaboration. The 3 day course is highly recommended & featured excellent lectures along with workstations with cadavers to practice procedures & diagnostics. It was great to learn how Mayo and other leading centers around the world are integrating state of the art technology with musculoskeletal ultrasound. There were over 1oo Physicians in attendance, a sign that more and more Dr’s are learning this skill to enhance the level of care they provide to their patients.
